Although based on a general design theme, rosettes and trim are unique to each instrument. Rather than following the traditional, intricate mosaic designs, I prefer to make up the rosette core from natural woods, either a solid band or tiles. The outer stringing usually matches the back and headstock centre strips.
Commissioned instruments have the option for customised rosettes and trim at no extra cost. The rosettes shown are designs for recent clients: the top has ebony and olive central tiles, with a sycamore and box dentil inlay; the lower has a central band of spalted beech, with a wheat-ear box and sycamore inlay.
I hold in stock many other woods for use in rosettes and trim, such as rosewood, pear, satinwood, lacewood, maple, walnut and yew.
